Saver's Credit: A Tax Benefit for employees who save in a 401(k) or an individual retirement account.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for the Saver's Credit, the following eligibility must be met:

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Not a full-time student

  • Not claimed as a dependent on someone else's return

  • Have 2007 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) that does not exceed:
-- $52,000 if married filing jointly
-- $39,000 if head of household with a qualifying person
-- $26,000 if single or married filing separately

Saver's Credit Overview
For the first $2,000 for an individual, or $4,000 for a married couple saved in the 401(k) Savings Plan or an IRA, an employee can receive a tax credit equal to 10%, 20%, or 50%.   That's between $200 and $1,000 directly off of the income taxes paid.   The actual credit allowance given is based on the taxpayer's Adjusted Gross Income and filing status.  The lower the income, the higher the credit. Be aware that the tax credit applies only as a reduction to income tax and not as cash in hand via a refund.

For more information about the Saver's Credit, employees may wish to read Publication 590 at www.irs.gov or consult a tax advisor.
